Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plans, Explained
One of the things I check most closely with clients is prescription coverage. Part D helps cover the cost of your medications through private, Medicare-approved plans — either standalone or bundled into a Medicare Advantage plan — and I'll walk you through which setup actually covers what you take.
Schedule Your Free ReviewHow Part D Works
Each Part D plan has its own list of covered drugs, called a formulary, organized into cost tiers. Two plans can look similar on paper but cover your specific medications very differently — which is why it's worth checking your actual prescription list against a plan's formulary rather than assuming coverage.
Recent Changes Worth Knowing About
Part D has been restructured in recent years, including a cap on annual out-of-pocket prescription costs. Because these figures are adjusted periodically, I always check the current numbers directly rather than relying on last year's figures — that's something I verify with you during a plan review rather than guess at.
Standalone Plan or Bundled With Medicare Advantage?
Standalone Part D
Pairs with Original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan, since Supplement plans don't include drug coverage.
Bundled With Advantage
Most Medicare Advantage plans already include Part D coverage as part of the plan.
Higher-Income Surcharges
Part D premiums can also be affected by IRMAA if your income is above certain thresholds. And if your income and resources are limited, you may qualify for Extra Help, a program that reduces Part D premiums, deductibles, and copays.
